It's not terribly prominent, because it doesn't exist on Windows, nor is there anybody trying to sell it, I doubt it even has a webpage, but it's probably the future. It's a kernel-level technology, so can squeeze out extremely good performance. This would allow giving the VM more RAM, which will speed it up quite a bit, if it's actually capped on RAM, less so if it's not.Īnd as has already been mentioned, if you go with Linux, check out KVM. Then Linux can be much lighter in terms of RAM usage, especially if you go with something like Lubuntu as host OS. VMs don't yet really interact with the GPU on their own, you'd have to set up a GPU passthrough for that (for which you need two GPUs and it does require some technical skill), so the usually less flaky GPU drivers on Windows shouldn't help. Generally, I see no reason why Windows would ever be faster for hosting VMs.
